Van Gogh Museum on Niksnut / Good for Nothing (Dutch): “Niksnut / Good for Nothing is en video-installatie gemaakt door Ilva Nieuwstraten (KABK 2024) die de tol van het moderne leven op mentaleen fysieke gezondheid onderzoekt. Haar werk legt serene scènes vast inverschillende parken rond Den Haag, waar ze mindfulness oefent door zichzelf onder te dompelen in de natuur en niets te doen. Zo zoeken we naast die vrijheid ook naar rust en een hernieuwde verbinding met de natuur. Maar waar en hoe zoeken we die verbinding eigenlijk? Waarom blijven we altijd aangetrokken tot de natuur? Ron Mandos Gallery: “For Best of Graduates 2024, Ilva Nieuwstraten (KABK 2024) presents Niksnut / Good for Nothing, a video installation that examines the toll of modern-day life on mental and physical health. Her work captures serene scenes in various parks around The Hague, where she practices mindfulness by immersing herself in nature and doing nothing. The artist lies in the landscape, letting ants crawl over her nose and feeling the touch of sand on her skin, transforming these moments into ‘living paintings’. Through this, she challenges the pace and pressures of contemporary society, advocating for a more balanced, grounded existence. Nieuwstraten’s unique blend of sound design, moving image, gardening, writing, and meditation stems from her rich educational background and diverse experiences. Her time studying Interactive / Media / Design at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and Film &amp; Moving Image at Tokyo Zokei University shaped her multi-disciplinary approach. Additionally, her immersion in Butoh at the Dairakudakan Artists Collective and her training in Biodynamic Farming at Warmonderhof add layers of depth to her work, connecting the physical and spiritual aspects of her art. Her video installation reflects her personal journey and struggles with mental health within a competitive capitalist society. Nieuwstraten’s history of burnout, combined with her Zen Buddhist studies at Great Vow Zen Monastery and Zen River Temple, influence her art deeply. ENI want to do too many things. The obsessiveness of humanity confronts me that go-go-going means that I am burning out, just like the earth itself. Overwhelmed, stressed and paralyzed from the climate crisis, ‘burn-out’ culture and excess external stimuli, I offer a radical act to counterbalance the current system. The videos show various parks in The Hague where suspiciously little is happening. The sand touching my skin, the smell of sprouting grass, ants crawling over my nose, I lie here in the landscape and do absolutely…nothing. They are, as it were, tableau vivants, ‘living paintings’. With Good for Nothing I practice, more or less, doing a little bit more of a little bit less. NLIk wil te veel. De obsessiviteit van de mensheid confronteert ook mij dat door- door- doorgaan betekent dat ik opbrand, net als de aarde zelf. Overweldigd, gestresst en verlamd door de klimaatcrisis, de ‘burn-out’ cultuur en de overdaad aan externe prikkels, bied ik een radicale actie als tegenwicht aan het huidige systeem. De video’s tonen parken in Den Haag waar verdacht weinig gebeurt. Met het zand op mijn huid, ontspruitend gras ruikend, mieren over mijn neus lopend, lig ik in het landschap en doe he-le-maal…Niks. Het zijn als het ware tableau vivants, ‘levende schilderijen’. In&nbsp;Borrowed Scenery a window is created to a view that blooms in glory, but is not reality.
